MULTIMEDIA MUSEUM

A voyage back in time along the Way of the Cross and the Holy Sepulchre

According to estimates, more than a million pilgrims follow each year the Way of the Cross, commemorating the 14 Stations of Jesus' Passion from his Condemnation to his Resurrection. The traditional route leads them from the Antonia Fortress along the Via Dolorosa in the Old City, up to the Holy Sepulchre. This route is in an architectural and urban environment which today many find difficult to understand.

The Multimedia Museum, addressing groups of organised pilgrims and individuals alike, will be a very useful tool for experiencing the places along the Way of the Cross and at the same time gaining a greater understanding. The immersive multimedia installation will provide visitors with an emotional experience about Jesus walking up to the Calvary, coupled with a learning effect on the urban evolution of Jerusalem and the Holy Sepulchre across the centuries – from Herod the Great, to Adrian, the Byzantine period, the Crusaders, Suleiman the Magnificent and the Ottoman period, until today.

The Multimedia Museum will be located right at the beginning of the Way of the Cross, at the Monastery of the Flagellation, whose beautiful courtyard is the starting point for most pilgrims. The immersive show of video projections, lights and surrounding sound effects, will be installed in the spacious Lapidarium hall of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, making the most out of its impressive architectural environment. The hall itself already contains small architectural remains from Herodian and Hadrianic periods; additional archaeological fragments related to the location (the Monastery of the Flagellation) will be exhibited and integrated in the immersive installation.
